2022 Quarter Error List with Pictures

2022 Quarter error coin photographs

Check the lettering around the edge of a Sally Ride quarter. On one small-blank error, parts of LIBERTY and the lower back lettering did not fit.

That coin sold for $10,181 in April 2023. The 2022 quarter errors below range from common doubling worth about $0.25 to an estimated $12,000 for an exceptional wrong-blank coin.

The five back designs need different close-up checks, so start with the woman’s name and follow the matching clues.

1. 2022 American Women Quarter Doubled Designs

2022 Quarter: Dr. Sally Ride — Doubled Die
2022 Quarter: Dr. Sally Ride — Doubled Die.

Tiny extra outlines may come from a doubled steel stamping tool, called a die. Some began in an earlier tool used to make many dies, so they are common.

Philadelphia Maya, Sally, Wilma, and Anna quarters share such front doubling at TRUST, the first 2, and the nostril. Denver Sally and Nina examples have an extra eye outline.

Other examples include Maya’s earring and Sally’s collar or chin. Denver Sally also has ear and hair doubling.

Anna ear-side and back doubling are separately reported. The actual extra outline matters more than the word “double” in a listing.

Estimated Value

Common doubling inherited by many stamping tools usually adds little or nothing. An ordinary circulated example may remain worth $0.25–$2, rather than becoming a rare doubled-die coin.

For a clearly matched individual doubled design, use an estimated $5–$150 range. Sharp separation and attractive unworn surfaces can support stronger prices.

Keep those two situations apart. A seller’s large price tag does not make the widespread Philadelphia front pattern as scarce as a distinct individual tool variety.

How to Identify

Read the back design and mint letter before using a 10× magnifier. On the four Philadelphia designs listed above, check above TRUST’s last T and the first 2, and below the nostril.

For Maya’s back, inspect inside, below, and right of the earring. Shared ear and name-letter doubling differs from an individual earring variety.

Philadelphia Sally examples show collar doubling eastward and chin doubling downward. Denver Sally and Nina eye traces point northeast; Sally’s separate ear and upper-hair traces point downward.

Compare Anna candidates with their own photographs rather than borrowing those positions. Flat shelves from striking movement and normal earring outlines are not enough.

Take each close-up under light from two directions. A true extra outline stays in the same place; a bright reflection moves when the light moves.

2. 2022 American Women Quarter Unusual Color from Blank Heating

A dark Anna May Wong quarter may have changed color before it was struck. Blanks are heated to soften them, a process called annealing.

Problems during that treatment can leave unusual surface color that survives striking. Year guides report such Anna examples, including a Philadelphia seller listing.

Color alone cannot establish the cause. Soil, chemicals, or heating a finished coin can also make it brown or dark.

The metal, surface texture, and edge therefore need to tell the same story. Even color across the whole coin does not prove that the change happened at the Mint.

Estimated Value

For a quarter authenticated as having a mint-made annealing problem, estimate $25–$250. The estimate applies to the heating error, not to every dark Anna May Wong coin.

Original surface texture and an attractive, clearly unusual appearance can add appeal. Corrosion, rubbing, or later chemical damage lowers it.

Compare coins with the same metal and finish. A normally toned silver collector coin should not be priced as a damaged-heating example merely because its color differs from pocket change.

How to Identify

Identify the metal before judging the color. An S can belong to an ordinary clad coin, a clad Proof, or a silver Proof made for collectors.

For a loose clad example, a scale and calipers should read near 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm. The 99.9% silver Proof standard is 6.343 grams at the same diameter.

Now compare the candidate with an ordinary Anna quarter under neutral white light. Look for color following scratches or corroded patches that could have developed later.

Use a 10× magnifier to inspect original surface texture and the grooved edge. A clad coin should still show its copper core.

Leave the surface untreated. A specialist needs the original color and texture to distinguish a blank-heating problem from later heat or chemicals.

3. 2022 American Women Quarter Struck Through Grease or Other Material

2022 Quarter: Anna May Wong — Struck-Through Error
2022 Quarter: Anna May Wong — Struck-Through Error.

Some quarters have a patch where the normal design never formed clearly. Grease or another object between the blank and stamping tool can block the design.

A Maya owner reported material still attached near UNITED STATES and the upper rays. Other Maya reports describe missing front detail.

An Anna S-mint example is pictured as struck through material, without a settled finish or exact location. These are separate coins.

For Nina quarters, a G that looks like C is not enough to diagnose blocked detail. The letter’s normal shape, wear, and an actual missing stroke must be distinguished.

Estimated Value

Minor genuine grease-filled detail can fit an estimated $5–$60 range. A larger, clear obstruction impression or authenticated retained material may bring roughly $50–$300.

The estimate depends on what the coin actually shows. A normal-looking G does not earn an error premium because someone reads the motto as “IN COD WE TRUST.”

Attached material can help explain the strike, but later glue or dirt is different. Leave the surface untouched so its condition and origin can be judged.

How to Identify

Do not pull at material still attached to a Maya coin. Photograph where it meets the surrounding design under a 10× magnifier, checking whether the strike formed around it.

For missing letters, compare a normal coin of the same design under matching light. Wear lowers many raised details; blocked material can leave a local interruption.

Follow the boundary of the weak patch. Scraping can leave lines across the surface or push metal up beside a cut.

For the Anna S candidate, identify the finish first. An S can mean an ordinary coin, a clad Proof, or a 6.343-gram silver Proof.

On Nina’s motto, compare the G stroke directly. A letter that merely resembles C does not establish grease, a chip, or any other minting error.

4. 2022 American Women Quarter Cracks, Chips, and Raised Tool-Damage Marks

2022 Quarter: Wilma Mankiller — Die Break / Cud
2022 Quarter: Wilma Mankiller — Die Break / Cud.

Raised lines or lumps often mean damage to the steel stamping tool. A crack leaves a ridge; missing steel leaves a larger raised patch.

Wilma Philadelphia examples show a stepped break near LIBERTY and, on later coins, a large back crack. The broken tool piece stayed trapped, so some design remains.

Smaller marks include Washington’s mouth or nose on Maya and Sally, Anna’s eye or finger, and Nina’s nose or flower area. They occur on separate coins.

Maya’s bird-side “twig” is another raised tool mark, described as either a scratch or crack in the steel.

Estimated Value

Small chips and narrow lines can fit an estimated $2–$50 range. Stronger, clearly visible marks may reach $50–$600, especially the Wilma retained break.

In July 2022, Coin World quoted specialist Mike Diamond reporting sales of those Wilma errors for $300 or more. That is a contemporary market report, not a single auction record.

Price the actual size, stage, and surface quality. A dramatic nickname or an unusually high online asking price does not establish comparable value.

How to Identify

Use angled light and a 10× magnifier to establish whether the mark rises above the surface. A scratch in the coin sinks inward; a scratch in its stamping tool can produce a raised line.

On Wilma’s front, inspect the twelve-o’clock LIBERTY area for a step that retains some design. A fully detached tool fragment would instead leave a more featureless rim-connected lump, called a cud.

Compare smaller marks with the same back design: Anna’s finger and hair need separate pictures, as do Nina’s flowers and Washington’s mouth. Do not assume several nicknames describe one coin.

Photograph the mark together with nearby letters so its position is clear. For an Anna back-cud candidate, follow the raised patch to the rim; a random blob away from the rim is not enough.

5. 2022 American Women Quarter Clashed Designs

A faint piece of the opposite design can appear where it does not belong. This happens when the stamping tools meet without a blank and mark each other.

Later coins receive those marks, known as a die clash. Sally Ride reports describe Washington’s neck or throat outline beside her and the window.

Maya Philadelphia examples show part of her face behind Washington’s ear and traces near the bird’s left-wing feathers. These locations belong to Maya’s design.

For a Nina candidate, the ghost shape must match Nina’s own opposite design. Sally’s window-side outline cannot identify a Nina error.

Estimated Value

Use an estimated $10–$1,000 range for genuine clashes, from faint traces to bold, attractive examples. The wide spread reflects how much of the opposing design can be seen.

Sally nicknames such as “Ghost Comet” and “Vomit Comet” describe reported appearances, not separate guaranteed price levels. A strong trace needs a matching design outline.

For a Nina candidate, apply the estimate only after confirming the clash. Ordinary window lines, polishing marks, and random scratches do not belong in these comparisons.

How to Identify

Use photographs of both faces to find the design that could have made the ghost outline. On Sally, the window frame and Earth are normal details.

The suspected clash beside Sally should match Washington’s neck or throat. Trace a curve rather than judging one short line on its own.

Maya’s check instead runs behind Washington’s ear and beside the bird’s left-wing feathers under a 10× magnifier. A Nina candidate needs a Nina-specific opposite-design match.

Photograph the faint outline under light from different directions. The shape should stay fixed while its shadow changes.

Compare the outline with the opposite face at the same scale. Random scratches and normal design lines will not follow the matching shape in the expected position.

6. 2022 American Women Quarter Off-Center Strikes

A shifted design and an untouched crescent can reveal a blank that entered the press out of position. Part of the intended design then falls beyond the available metal.

The result is an off-center strike. A Maya year guide reports a Philadelphia example displaced by about 10%.

For Nina quarters offered with this error, inspect both faces for the same physical relationship. A generic description of a large percentage does not identify a particular Nina coin.

A thin rim on only one face can have a different cause. The blank’s position must explain what happened to both designs.

Estimated Value

Estimate $50–$1,200 for authenticated, dated off-center examples, with smaller shifts generally toward the lower end. A large blank crescent and a readable design can attract stronger interest.

The Maya 10% report should not be priced as a much more dramatic displacement. Likewise, a Nina candidate needs its own visible error before applying the range.

A surviving date, mint letter, and recognizable woman’s portrait help identify the coin. Scratches, cleaning, or later edge cuts can reduce its appeal.

How to Identify

Place a normal quarter of the same design beside the candidate and compare the complete outlines. An off-center strike leaves untouched metal opposite lost design, whereas a narrow rim on one face may come from a shifted stamping tool.

For a loose example, use a scale and calipers to compare with 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm. Under a 10× magnifier, inspect the grooved edge and the boundary of the blank crescent for filing that removed finished design.

Check the back and front in matching positions, keeping the date, mint letter, and woman’s name visible in your photographs. Both designs should show the blank’s displacement; the reported Maya percentage is not a measurement of a Nina candidate.

7. 2022 American Women Quarter Missing Outer Clad Layer

A copper-colored face can appear when an outer layer is missing from an ordinary quarter. Its normal metal has a copper core covered by pale copper-nickel layers.

GreatCollections cataloged a Denver Wilma example with the front layer missing, weighing 4.8 grams. It was graded NGC MS62, an unworn grade with noticeable marks.

The back retained its normal outer layer. This specific coin provides a clear example of the error.

A Maya candidate needs the same physical checks on its own metal. Gray color alone is normal for many quarters and does not establish a missing layer.

Estimated Value

For a genuine one-face missing-layer quarter, estimate $100–$1,500, depending on preservation and how clearly the exposed copper is shown. The intact design helps show that the layer was absent when the strike formed it.

Even copper color and attractive surfaces can make the error easier to appreciate. Scratches or corrosion can reduce appeal.

Apply this range to a Maya candidate after authentication. The cataloged Wilma coin’s 4.8 grams is not a measured weight for another design.

How to Identify

Weigh a loose candidate before judging its color. Ordinary clad quarters start near 5.67 grams, while the cataloged Wilma example is 4.8 grams.

Use calipers to compare the diameter with 24.26 mm and examine the grooved edge under a 10× magnifier. Look for the normal layering on the back side and the missing pale layer on the copper face.

A freshly ground surface can also lose weight, but it cuts or flattens completed design. A mint-made missing layer should agree with the way the remaining metal received the strike.

Check the mint and back design in the same photographs. An S silver Proof has no ordinary copper core, and a gray Maya coin is not automatically a missing-layer example.

8. 2022 American Women Quarter Sally Ride Design on a Nickel Blank

2022 Quarter: Dr. Sally Ride — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike
2022 Quarter: Dr. Sally Ride — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike.

The top of LIBERTY does not fully fit on this Sally Ride coin. On the back, the lower parts of QUARTER DOLLAR and DR. SALLY RIDE also meet the edge.

The reason is a blank intended for a five-cent nickel receiving a quarter design. It offered less room than a normal quarter blank.

NGC graded the Philadelphia error MS67, meaning unworn with very few imperfections. The small blank and cropped lettering remain the identifying features.

This is a different mistake from losing an outer layer. A nickel blank has copper-nickel metal throughout, rather than a quarter’s layered structure.

Estimated Value

NGC reported a $10,181 sale at GreatCollections on April 30, 2023, including the buyer’s fee. That result applies to the MS67 Philadelphia Sally Ride coin.

An estimated $3,000–$12,000 range suits authenticated examples, allowing for condition and the clarity of the wrong-blank strike. The known sale is near the upper end.

Clear lettering and attractive surfaces support value. A damaged, filed-down quarter is not a cheaper example of the same mint error.

How to Identify

A specialist’s metal test should show copper-nickel throughout, not a quarter’s pale outer layers and copper core. Do not scratch the coin to test it.

Weigh and measure a loose candidate with a scale and calipers, comparing the nickel blank’s starting standards of 5 grams and 21.21 mm. A normal clad quarter is 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm, though striking can spread the smaller nickel blank.

Under a 10× magnifier, compare the clipped-looking LIBERTY and lower Sally Ride lettering with the certified example, then inspect the edge for filing. The letters should run naturally beyond the available metal, rather than end where someone ground away part of a finished quarter.

Conclusion

Estimated values for these 2022 quarters run from $0.25 to $12,000. Common inherited doubling can remain ordinary pocket change, while the Sally Ride nickel-blank example brought $10,181.

Read the design name and mint letter before comparing photographs. A Wilma copper face, a Maya bird-side line, and a Sally ghost outline tell different stories.

Keep attached material in place, weigh unusual loose coins, and check raised marks under changing light before paying for a nickname.
