1872 Dollar Coin Error List with Pictures
Extra digits hide in Liberty’s rocky seat on one 1872 silver-dollar variety. On collector Proofs, the easier target is the repeated lettering in the motto above the eagle.
A superb 1872 Cameo Proof brought $50,400 in January 2022. That is the value of an exceptional Proof, not a separate fee for its doubled lettering.
This 1872 Liberty Seated dollar error list explains both features, with estimated whole-coin values from $400–$55,000. Read on to see where to look and which comparisons fit an ordinary coin or a Proof.
1872 Liberty Seated Dollar Misplaced Date in the Rock

A small extra 1 sits in the rocky base below Liberty’s shield. Parts of extra 2s also appear around the base’s edge above the normal 2 in the date.
The date punch first touched the steel stamping tool too high. Its traces remained after the date was placed correctly below the seated figure.
This Philadelphia ordinary-strike variety is called FS-301, also known as Breen-5491. These names identify the same misplaced-date feature.
The extra fragments matter more than a generally high or thick-looking date. Normal rock lines can imitate part of a digit when viewed alone.
Estimated Value
Estimate $400–$15,000 for identified examples from worn coins through attractive unworn pieces. Clear digit fragments and original surfaces help distinguish stronger examples from heavily worn or cleaned coins.
An OC-3 example graded PCGS MS64+ brought $7,821.60 in January 2024 at Heritage Auctions. The grade describes an unworn dollar with relatively few marks.
That is a whole-coin result, not a fixed premium for the misplaced date. Wear across the rock can hide important details and reduce collector interest.
How to Identify
Find the normal 1872 date first, then move the magnifier upward into the rock rather than searching around every digit. Below the shield, compare the extra 1 with the outline shown on an identified FS-301 example.
Above the main 2, inspect both the inside and the edge of the rocky base for remnants of the earlier 2s. Use light from different sides so the raised fragments remain distinct from shadows along ordinary rock lines.
Keep the complete rock and main date visible in the same photograph, especially when wear weakens one of the fragments. Match the extra 1 and 2 remnants together; a date that merely sits high does not establish this variety.
1872 Liberty Seated Dollar Doubled Motto on Proofs
Letters in IN GOD WE have strong extra outlines on these Philadelphia Proof dollars. Proofs were specially made collector coins, rather than ordinary pieces intended for circulation.
The back stamping tool already contained the repeated design. A strike transferred those doubled letters to each blank, so the feature does not require two blows in different positions.
The separation is especially useful around IN GO and the small bars at the top and bottom of I. Specialists identify this tool as 1872 PA and describe it as the year’s shared Proof back tool.
Estimated Value
For the Proof coins carrying this back, estimate $1,500–$55,000, from impaired or lightly worn pieces through exceptional examples. Surface quality and the contrast between the picture and background strongly influence value.
PCGS records a PR67 Cameo sale of $50,400 in January 2022. Cameo describes a frosted design against a more reflective background.
The doubling belongs to the usual Proof tool identified by specialists. It should not be priced as an automatic extra premium on top of the Proof’s value.
How to Identify
Start with IN GOD WE above the eagle rather than hunting through all the back lettering. The separated outlines are large enough to show clearly on a well-preserved example.
Under a magnifier, compare the top and bottom bars of I with the next letters. Follow the extra raised edges through IN GO instead of relying on a single bright reflection.
A flat shelf from movement during striking differs from a second rounded letter outline. Tilt the coin to see which shape remains as the light changes.
Check that the coin is an 1872 Proof before choosing a price comparison. The same back tool also served in 1873, but that later date is a different coin.
Compare the entire motto with a clear 1872 Proof photograph. Matching the separated letter shapes gives the most direct confirmation.
Conclusion
For the misplaced date, search the rock above the normal digits rather than just the date itself. For a Proof, the divided edges in IN GOD WE provide a much larger target.
Estimated whole-coin values span $400–$55,000, with preservation and finish driving much of the difference. Match the complete variety before pricing the coin, and remember that familiar doubling on these Proofs does not automatically create an extra rarity premium.
