1902 Half Dollar Error List with Pictures

1902 Barber Half Dollar, obverse and reverse

Raised cracks cross Liberty’s bust on the Duckor 1902-S half dollar. This exceptionally preserved coin sold for $32,200 in August 2010, graded PCGS MS67+ with CAC approval.

These 1902 half dollar errors also include reported doubled ribbon and star details. Estimated ranges are $250–$1,500 for the stated doubled-die grades and $20,000–$33,000 for superb San Francisco crack examples.

Read on to separate the small features from the condition that drives those very different prices.

1902 Barber Half Dollar Doubled Die Obverse Error (Estimated Up to $1,500)

Look at the ribbon and the stars to Liberty’s left for reported extra outlines. The Barber Coin Collectors’ Society list includes a 1902 Philadelphia entry at those locations.

Its survey recorded no examples from respondents. The listing also does not identify a particular ordinary coin or a Proof, specially made for collectors.

A doubled die is a steel stamping tool that already has repeated design detail. One normal blow can copy both outlines onto a coin.

A candidate needs matching detail in both reported areas. A single thick star point cannot establish the whole variety.

Estimated Value

Estimate $250–$1,500 for identified examples from VF, with clear remaining detail despite wear, through MS63, unworn with noticeable marks. Original surfaces and visible doubling support stronger comparisons.

An 1892 Barber quarter with front doubling and a repunched date sold for $528 at Heritage in March 2024. PCGS graded it MS63.

That is a different denomination with an additional feature. It provides broad Barber-design context, not a recorded sale or fixed price for a 1902 half dollar.

How to Identify

Photograph the ribbon and left-side stars together before enlarging them. With a 10× magnifier, look for matching extra outlines in both areas.

Compare rounded separation and split star points with a confirmed example. Flat shelves from movement during striking have a different shape.

Move the lamp so a reflection is not mistaken for another raised edge. The extra shape must remain in the metal.

Read 1902 and HALF DOLLAR, then confirm that no mint letter appears below the eagle. Use a scale and calipers against 12.50 grams and 30.6 mm, and inspect the edge grooves.

Judge collector Proof manufacture separately. The useful first match is the same repeated ribbon and star detail on a correctly identified Philadelphia coin.

1902 Barber Half Dollar Obverse Die Crack Error (Up to $32,200)

A short raised line leaves the bust tip on a Philadelphia example. It stops before reaching the date or star 13.

A New Orleans coin has a short crack at the same general spot. The San Francisco example carries a more extensive pattern.

One San Francisco line crosses the bust, while another joins the date’s 2 to star 13 across the bust tip. These are separate coins, not all the marks to expect on every 1902 half.

Silver entered narrow cracks in the stamping tools during striking. It left raised ridges on the coin rather than cutting grooves through it.

Estimated Value

Estimate $20,000–$33,000 for superb MS67-level 1902-S coins comparable to the Duckor example. That grade means unworn with very few marks.

The MS67+ CAC coin sold for $32,200 in August 2010. PCGS records its later sale at $22,800 in April 2020.

These prices cover an exceptional whole coin. A small crack on a Philadelphia or New Orleans half does not give it that value; compare its own mint, wear, and surfaces.

How to Identify

Read the mint letter below the eagle’s tail before choosing a crack photograph. O means New Orleans, S means San Francisco, and an unmarked area identifies Philadelphia.

For Philadelphia, follow the short line from the bust tip and note its endpoint. Use a separate image for the New Orleans crack.

The San Francisco example needs both the longer bust line and the route from 2 to star 13. Do not join unrelated marks to make them fit.

With a 10× magnifier and side lighting, distinguish raised ridges from scratches or fine parallel lines. Check the edge grooves too.

Use a scale and calipers against 12.50 grams and 30.6 mm. Start with the complete raised crack route on the correct mint’s coin.

Conclusion

Estimated values are $250–$1,500 for the stated doubled-die grades and $20,000–$33,000 for exceptional 1902-S crack examples. The higher range requires superb preservation, not just a visible line.

Check the ribbon and left stars for repeated outlines, or trace the bust lines after reading the mintmark. Those are different features with different comparisons.

The Duckor coin’s two sales price one outstanding half dollar, rather than an extra charge for its cracks.
