About Us

Error Coins (error-coins.org) is a reference website dedicated to U.S. error coins. We collect, organize, and explain information about mint errors and die varieties found on coins struck by the United States Mint, from everyday pocket change to rare collector pieces.

Every coin tells a story, and error coins tell some of the most interesting ones. A doubled die, an off-center strike, or a coin struck on the wrong planchet is a small record of something that went wrong inside the Mint. Our goal is to help you spot these coins, understand how they happened, and learn what they may be worth.

What We Cover

Our guides span U.S. cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollar coins, including State, America the Beautiful, and other commemorative series. The main types of errors and varieties we document include:

  • Die errors and varieties: doubled dies, repunched and over mint marks, die cracks, cuds, and die clashes
  • Striking errors: off-center strikes, broadstrikes, double and multiple strikes, brockages, and partial collars
  • Planchet errors: clipped planchets, laminations, wrong-metal and wrong-planchet strikes, and blank planchets
  • Famous rarities: well-known pieces such as the 1955 doubled die cent, the 1943 bronze cent, and the 2004 Wisconsin “extra leaf” quarter

Each entry explains how the error was made, how to identify it, what to compare it against, and how it is typically valued by collectors.

Our Mission

We want to make error coin collecting accessible to everyone. Too much good information is scattered across forums, auction listings, and old books, and too much bad information circulates online. We bring it together in one place and explain it in plain language.

To do that, we:

  • Use clear, close-up photos and side-by-side comparisons with normal coins
  • Explain the minting process behind each error, so you understand why it happened
  • Point out common look-alikes, such as post-mint damage and altered coins, that are often mistaken for real errors
  • Update our guides as new varieties are discovered and market values change

Who We’re For

Error Coins is for anyone curious about the coins in their pocket. That includes beginners who just found something odd in their change, seasoned collectors hunting for specific varieties, and coin roll hunters looking for their next big find.

A Note on Values

The values on our site are estimates based on recent sales and collector demand. They are a starting point, not an appraisal. If you think you have a valuable error, we recommend having it authenticated and graded by a reputable third-party grading service before you buy or sell.
